2010 Winter Olympic Training underway at Sun Peaks

November 2007

November 9, 2007 – Sun Peaks, BC - Since 2005 the Austria National Ski Team has been calling Sun Peaks Resort home, as their official North American early season training venue leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympics.  Often called “The World’s Best”, the Austrian team has chosen Sun Peaks Resort over other ski areas world-wide due to the reliability of early season snow, dedicated training course and the enormous commitment by Sun Peaks Resort to provide a quality race product.
In preparation for their arrival, Sun Peaks Mountain Operations has been busy preparing the OSV run in the Nancy Greene International Training Centre.  Snowmaking and grooming crews have been working diligently for weeks making snow and perfecting the course.
The OSV run, which stands for Österreichischer Skiverband literally translating to Austrian Ski Federation, underwent a re-grade during the summer to create a more fluid course.  According to Jaimie Tattersfield Mountain Operations Manager, “Preparations for the upcoming training session are continuing.  Grading changes to the lower third of the Nancy Greene International Race Centre means that the team can better utilize the terrain available and once we open for the public we no longer encroach on the Five Mile run.  So far Austrian Team officials are pleased with what we have been able to prepare.  We are all looking forward to another successful training period with our friends from Austria.”

Austrian coaches are already on-site and the first group of athletes are slated to arrive this weekend. The full men’s speed and technical teams are expected to be at Sun Peaks for the next few weeks, training for the first North American World Cup of the season at Lake Louise later this month.
The men’s team plans to be hitting the slopes on Sunday including “powerhouses” Hermann Maier and Benjamin Raich.  The woman’s team is currently planning to arrive in mid November to begin their scheduled training as well.
